International Resources for Education of African Deaf And Blind Children: I-READ-ABC

The mission of International Resources for Education of Africa’s Deaf And Blind Children (I-READ-ABC) is to establish, facilitate and promote educational opportunities for all Deaf-Blind Children in order for them to develop to their fullest potential into self-sufficient adults within their communities.

Kyambogo Scholarship University Program

The I Read ABC Kyambogo Scholarship Program is now in its fifth year.  It is a two-year fully funded B.Ed program in special education administered in conjunction with Kyambogo University, Kampala. It is awarded to a diploma holder teacher who is actively working with and has demonstrated the commitment to work with deaf or blind children.  The successful candidate will have applied and been accepted at Kyambogo University for the B.Ed. program in special education.

The applicants do not apply directly to I Read ABC.  Instead, unknown to the successful candidate, I Read ABC works with Kyambogo University to identify and screen potential candidates.  A short list is compiled and a telephone interview conducted with each candidate, focusing on work with deaf and blind children in his or her community.  The final decision is made based on a number of criteria including experience working with deaf and blind, commitment to deaf and blind education, academic performance, financial needs and geographical location.

It costs $2900 to fund the two-year B.Ed at Kyambogo University, providing complete wall-to-wall tuition coverage, accommodation, and transport funds. The successful candidates since 2005 are the following:
